Nearly 60 Years of History
Going further. Always improving. This is what has allowed us to evolve as a company. From generation to generation, we share a passion for creating innovative solutions and working in synergy. Nearly 60 years of innovation and success!
Gabrielle and Emmanuel Bastrash founded their refrigeration and heating company in Longueuil. They laid solid, lasting foundations, guided by family values and the desire to provide sustainable solutions to their Montréal clientele.
The company seized a strategic opportunity and acquired Demers’ plumbing division. This acquisition promised future growth, and the company became Réfrigération, Plomberie et Chauffage Longueuil Inc.
Although the eldest son, Serge Bastrash, had joined the company in 1975, it was in 1982 that he took over the reins. His vision and passion drove him to expand services in refrigeration, serving not only residential clients but also commercial and industrial markets.
The idea of heating an entire building using heat generated by a refrigeration system seemed far-fetched at the time. With the trust of a visionary client, the company installed a thermal plant that recovered 100% of the energy created to heat a supermarket—no backup system required.
To reflect its growing scale, Serge created the Klimfax brand. The fleet of yellow trucks, now a strong visual symbol in Québec, quickly built immediate recognition and a memorable identity.
To innovate and develop forward-thinking solutions, the company launched an engineering division. The team explored bold new concepts and promoted the use of next-generation refrigerants.
One of the Bastrash brothers, Alain, joined Serge to build a 40,000-square-foot complex in Longueuil. Despite initial skepticism from bankers, rapid growth soon proved them wrong—the space was already too small just a year later.
A new control and automation service was developed to manage client systems remotely. This department enhanced energy optimization and positioned the company as a pioneer in technological integration.
While business thrived in Canada, CEO Serge Bastrash partnered with engineer Pierre-Alain Giroud to acquire Climat Gestion S.A. in Europe. This move brought new expertise in refrigeration and strengthened control system capabilities.
The company introduced its first CO2 refrigeration system—an emerging technology that would become its industry trademark. This confirmed its role as a pioneer and innovator in sustainable, next-generation solutions.
Amid rapid growth, Serge founded Zero-C to group commercial and industrial refrigeration and ventilation. Klimfax shifted its focus exclusively to residential, creating a clear division of activities.
Zero-C acquired Climat-Control PL Inc. to increase commercial and industrial refrigeration sales. The company also achieved a world first by installing a transcritical CO2 thermal plant in a sports complex—further proof of its expertise and commitment to delivering unique solutions.
Zero-C designed and manufactured its first CO2 system in-house, evolving from installer to manufacturer. This enabled the company to deliver comprehensive, tailor-made solutions that meet the complex needs of the market.
The acquisition of Fixair, specializing in industrial refrigeration, marked a turning point. Zero-C added an industrial division, expanded services, strengthened resources, and increased purchasing power with major suppliers.
Zero-C continued its growth by acquiring assets from Réfrigération Supérieure Inc. This expanded its expertise, opened new markets, and reinforced its commitment to exceeding client expectations
Zero-C acquired Sertech Inc., an electrical contractor. With this addition, the company became a fully integrated provider, offering turnkey solutions that did not rely on external intermediaries.
Zero-C celebrated 50 years in business and has a team of over 130 employees. It remained true to its core values of passion, rigor, and innovation, while consolidating its position as a leader in the industry.
The company relocated to new facilities in St-Bruno to support its growth and founded Coolmart Inc. to expand its manufacturing operations. These strategic initiatives enhanced its innovation capacity and expanded its offerings.
With over 150 employees, Zero-C is now a full-service provider of refrigeration, air conditioning, and ventilation solutions. Innovation, commitment, and passion remain at the heart of its success and its vision for the future.
